Voltaren pain relief gels
There are 5 products in the Voltaren gel range:
- Voltaren Emulgel Back & Muscle Pain,
- Voltaren Emulgel Back & Muscle Pain with a No Mess Applicator,
- Voltaren Emulgel Extra Strength,
- Voltaren Emulgel Joint Pain Extra Strength,
- Voltaren Emulgel Joint Pain
All work to relieve acute pain and reduce swelling (inflammation) in the muscle and joints, freeing you to do the things you love.
What are Voltaren gels used for?
Voltaren gels are used for getting you on the path to joyful movement with less pain. You can use Voltaren gel on minor injuries. It is great for knee pain, shoulder pain, wrist pain, and more.
You can use Voltaren gels for relief from back pain, knee pain strains, shoulder pain, hip pain strains or joint pain, specifically the:
- relief of pain, inflammation, and swelling in:
- soft-tissue injuries or trauma of the tendons, ligaments, muscles and joints. These can be due to sprains, strains, and backache caused by everyday injuries; or even tired or inflamed muscles that can occur from regular physical exertion.

How often can you use Voltaren gels?
How often you can use your Voltaren gel depends on which gel you have chosen in accordance with your needs.
Voltaren Emulgel Extra Strength is for moderate pain, as it has a higher dosage of the anti-inflammatory diclofenac than the Voltaren Emulgel Back & Muscle Pain. Our Extra Strength gel can be applied once every 12 hours. It also has added permeation enhancer that means more pain-relieving active ingredient penetrates the skin.
Voltaren Emulgel Back & Muscle Pain 1.16% has a lower concentration of diclofenac for mild pain and can be applied 3 to 4 times a day.

The duration of treatment depends on the natural course of healing, rest, and on clinical response. The gel should not be used for more than 7 days for muscle and joint injuries unless recommended by a doctor. If your condition does not improve or worsens within 7 days of starting treatment, consult your doctor to exclude an alternative underlying cause of pain.

How to use Voltaren gel

Voltaren Emulgel Joint Pain Extra Strength and Voltaren Emulgel Joint Pain Regular Strength Tubes: before first use, unscrew and remove the cap. Use the reverse side of the cap to insert, twist and remove the seal from the tube. Open your tube of Voltaren Gel by twisting off the easy-to-grip triangular cap.

Voltaren Emulgel Back & Muscle Pain with a No Mess Applicator Tubes: To remove the seal before first use, remove the transparent protective cover and then unscrew the applicator cap. Use the star-shape groove (the key) located at the side of the applicator cap to remove the security seal (star seal) of the tube. Screw the applicator cap back on the tube before dispensing the gel. To open, simply pull the white part of the applicator cap. Gently squeeze the tube to push the gel to the surface of the applicator cap. |
How much Voltaren gel can I apply?
Voltaren gel delivers diclofenac, an effective anti-inflammatory, directly to the source of your pain. That’s why a little bit goes a long way. The amount needed will vary depending upon the size of the painful or swollen area.
For Regular Strength products, 2g to 4g (1g equals a strip approximately 2cm long) of gel will be sufficient to cover a 400cm2 to 800cm2 area.
For Extra Strength products, 2g of gel measured using the provided dosing card found in the product package will be sufficient.
